New Loom!

Kerocaro/ June 17, 2020/ A&S, Project, Weaving/ 0 comments

For Mothers Day I had asked for a new Inkle loom. As much as I love my tablet loom it isn’t something I can do with kiddo. I get lost in the card turns, and it gets worse if I need to stop for any reason. Thus I figured if all I had to track was up down I stood a chance of weaving more then once a year. After looking at a number of looms I decided to go with WindhavenFiberTools. They had made my first loom and I love the quality and the feel of the loom. I had wanted the larger but COVID had limited her stock so I decided The Minstrel Inkle Loom would be joining the family. Unfortunately, calamity stuck, and about a day or so

From Dye to Pigment

Kerocaro/ April 18, 2020/ A&S, Illumination, Project/ 0 comments

I need to start by saying that THL Marion Forester is probably the best enabler there is. She was kind enough to post her hand out for Pigments in her blog recently, and with my things to dye stash dwindling I decided to give pigments a go. Before you dive in I HIGHLY suggest reading up on her blog. Pigments, like dye, can be toxic and it is best to have some idea of what you are doing. So were did I start? Well with a snow storm and an Amazon order! I needed a mortar and pestle, gum arabic and some droppers. The snowstorm part provided the flowers as we had to cut the blossoms in out in our garden. We had some sea shells on hand and I

How to Dye with Sumac

Kerocaro/ March 25, 2020/ A&S, Project/ 0 comments

So one of the things I haven’t been able to do much of as of late is dye. Without a dedicated workspace, I have to wait for good weather so I can work outdoors. However this last week the weather opened up and I pounced on the chance to get some work in. What is Sumac? I advise checking out the Wiki for a full run down but as a short summary Sumac (/ˈsjuːmæk/) or (/ˈsuːmæk/), also spelled sumach, sumak, soumak, and sumaq, is any one of about 35 species of flowering plants in the genusRhus and related genera, in the family Anacardiaceae. Sumac grows in subtropical and temperate regions throughout the world, especially in East Asia, Africa, and North America.[3][4] Wiki The important part is that you can use the bark and leaves for dye! We happen to have a rather thriving group of trees thanks to

The Italian Dress

Kerocaro/ January 14, 2020/ A&S, Clothing, Project/ 0 comments

So remember how I said deadlines are my norm state of getting things done? Past me knew that despite having several weekends, and time in between this dress was going to be a challenge to finish. So the weekend before should be enough? Trust me I hate past me. Most of my garb is in the early period, with the exception of 2 pieces I have made all of it to date. Most of it is rectangles with tricky triangles. Simple, you can knock it together in a night if needed. Add a bit of flashy trim some beads and good to go. This, well, this was different. I need to state first off that The Honorable Lady Isabelle de Calais is the only reason this dress got done. She

The start of something Italian.

Kerocaro/ November 10, 2019/ Clothing, Project/ 0 comments

Some times I just need a good push for making something…the right piece of fabric, a full day of nothing….or enough beer to get me to drop my worry of getting something perfect. Or a deadline. I am really good with a deadline. So when 12th night was announced followed by a whole how-to class I said, why not?! It oddly enough checked all my boxes! (Ok mayhap not the drinking but I am sure a Drunk A&S will pop up) I found beautiful fabric, have Sundays to work sans kid, and a deadline of Jan. We started with undergarments! A logical start, you need what is under the gown to make the over gown look right. Of course, being me I over thought it. But reality says “hey this

Fall Crown Tournament 2019

Kerocaro/ September 29, 2019/ Events, Project/ 0 comments

So on top of running this blog, I also manage our website and help moderate Social Media for our local group. Thus when his current majesty made a plea for some “fighter cards”(I am not sure what else to call them, basically a photo and who is fighting for who) and shields for Crown tournament I had a “Hey I can do that!” moment. Fast-forward to the week after Labor Day. The fighter cards, all things considered, were easy to do. I made a blank keeping with the chess theme and then plugged in each of the fighters who got me a photo and device. Those who didn’t I just place their arms and I moved on. We posted these to the Facebook group to help the populace know who

Battlemoor Prep-Food Part 1

Kerocaro/ July 5, 2019/ Food & Drink, Project/ 0 comments

One of the things I realized I needed to work on was food. More so when I said why yes I will cook 2 nights and a lunch for our meal plan. Last year I panned and packed a cooler-less meal plan. Something I get strange looks for. But I do hate watching ice and making sure the cold stays cold. For those interested, I took a photo of my food all prepped. From left to right, pre-made Coffee, extra tuna packet and back up mac and cheese(No clue how I planned to make it but I had it) Loaf of bread and beef jerky. The Tupperware has crackers, PB and applesauce. Then Gnocchi, behind that was shelled pumpkin seeds and Ginger. Under the Tuna and Gnocchi are containers of

Battlemoor Prep Part 1-Banners

Kerocaro/ July 2, 2019/ Plans, Project/ 0 comments

With the Byers event over it is time to move on to Battlemoor prep. So looking over the list I had started back at the first of the year it boiled down to Tent Bedding Clothing Banners With the tent taken care of, bedding sorted and clothing being ignored as I am now clothing 2 additional people that left me with Banners. With silk banners being more work then I wanted to put forward until my device is ready I settled for a canvas banner with our Canton’s populace badge. I had started it back in May with the hope I could take it to Byers but after an afternoon of painting the border and the weekends escaping me I set it aside until last night. I ended up free

Instagram!

Kerocaro/ June 3, 2019/ Project/ 0 comments

So one of the few social media platforms I actually like is Instagram. I rather enjoy the little snapshot of life, and despite the fact that hashtags still are odd I have found the #mysca to be rather refreshing a point of inspiration. So I encourage you to check my SCA account out, //www.instagram.com/ofgreenandgold/ It again isn’t official but I like being able to add event snapshots and my small Raven friend may be making his debut there when he isn’t taking over the official baronial feed. I will also have the most recent image as part of the website for those who don’t do Instagram.

Wet Felting

Kerocaro/ April 8, 2019/ A&S, Project/ 0 comments

So this months Fiber guild was focused on wet felting. Prior to this my experience with felting was unknowingly washing and drying a wool sweater. So with high hopes I made my way over excited to felt some thing on purpose. The first thing we needed was a mold. This was a sheet of padded plastic packing sheets, think the kind of stuff you use between dishes. I picked a small oblong one to work with. Next, we started out laying out small pulls of wool roving. (Basically, just give a light tug to get a small amount of the fibers out) You lay each of the fiber going in one direction with enough to fold over the mold. Once you get a good layer you lay the next layer
